Movie Fundraiser at Vashon Movie Theatre: The Anxious Generation

The Anxious Generation: A Fundraiser at the Vashon Theatre for Women Hold the Key

Join Women Hold the Key for an evening of learning, growth, and community action. Together, we’ll watch bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s powerful talk based on his book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

Haidt reveals how the rise of smartphones and social media has “rewired” childhood, fueling an international adolescent mental health crisis. From the decline of play-based childhood to the explosion of phone-based living, he lays out the evidence behind rising rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness among youth.

In a clear, accessible presentation, Haidt explores:

• Why childhood changed so rapidly between 2010–2015

• The five foundational harms of screen-saturated adolescence, and

• How families, schools, and communities can restore balance and connection

After the screening, stay for a panel discussion with Vashon parents and school counselors Anna Waldman, Yvette Butler, and Tara Vanselow, followed by a community conversation. Together, we’ll reflect on what resonated, share perspectives, and explore what we can do to support the health and resilience of our island’s youth.

Doors open at 5:30 pm. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY to grab snacks and find your seat before the program begins at 6:00.

This is an ALL GENDERS welcome event.

Tickets by donation to Women Hold the Key:

  • Community Builder – $15: Helps us bring people together for dialogue

  • Conversation Starter – $30: Helps spark change

  • Future Shaper – $50: Invests in our kids’ wellbeing and healthier communities

  • Keyholder – $75: Helps unlock possibility

  • Changemaker – $100: Makes a significant contribution to shift the narrative and support our work
